Retirement. It's a new chapter, a chance to relax, indulge, and reflect on a career well-spent on the rugby field. But for many retired players, the transition can be challenging. The structured routine, the camaraderie, the adrenaline rush of the game – it's all gone.

That's where staying active comes in. It's not just about physical health (though that's a huge part!). It's about maintaining your mental well-being, social connections, and that sense of purpose that defined your playing days.

This January, as many of us are dusting off the Christmas cobwebs and thinking about getting back in shape, let's explore why staying active is crucial for retired rugby league players and how you can make it a part of your new game plan.

Why staying active matters in retirement

Physical health: Let's face it, rugby takes a toll on the body. Staying active helps manage old injuries, maintain mobility, and reduce the risk of health issues like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

Mental wellbeing: Exercise is a proven mood booster. It combats stress, anxiety, and depression, which can be common during the transition to retirement.

Cognitive function: Regular physical activity keeps your mind sharp. It improves memory, focus, and cognitive function, helping you stay mentally agile.

Social connection: Group activities and exercise classes provide opportunities to connect with others, combat feelings of isolation, and build new friendships.

Sense of purpose: Setting new fitness goals, training for an event, or simply enjoying the challenge of a new activity can give you a renewed sense of purpose and accomplishment.

What other Past Player Associations are doing

You're not alone in this journey! Many Past Player Associations are recognising the importance of staying active and creating opportunities for their members:

Wakefield Trinity PPA: For over a year now, they have been successfully organising a monthly exercise and social club that has become a cornerstone for many retired players. This initiative not only provides a structured way to maintain physical fitness but also serves as a vibrant social hub where former teammates can come together, share stories, and relive the camaraderie of their playing days. Participants have found it to be an excellent opportunity to stay in shape, engage in friendly competition, and enjoy a variety of activities that cater to different fitness levels and interests.

Wigan Warriors PPA: They've organised ad-hoc exercise sessions to cater to the needs of their retired players, recognising the importance of maintaining fitness and camaraderie.

St Helens PPA: For those seeking a more relaxed pace, St Helens has established a walking club, catering to all abilities and ages. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors, socialise, and stay active without putting too much stress on the body.

RL Cares charity bike ride: For the more adventurous, the annual RL Cares charity bike ride offers a challenging goal to focus on. It requires dedicated training and provides a fantastic opportunity to raise money for a good cause while pushing your limits.

Finding your fit: activities for every retired player

The beauty of staying active is that there's something for everyone.  Here are a few ideas:

Gym workouts: Strength training, cardio, and flexibility exercises can be adapted to your fitness level and goals.

Swimming: A low-impact activity that's great for all ages and abilities.

Cycling: Enjoy the outdoors and explore new routes with minimal impact on your joints.

Walking: A simple and accessible activity with numerous health benefits.

Golf: A social and enjoyable way to stay active and challenge yourself.

Yoga or Pilates: Improve flexibility, balance, and core strength.

Gardening: A therapeutic and physically engaging activity.
