A career in the fire and rescue service is a very appealing option for many players, but what exactly does the job involve?

Players possess lots of transferable skills such as working as a team, punctuality and communication which would benefit them if they were to pursue a career in the fire service.

In May 2023, Hull FC players and their Player Welfare Manager Feka Paleaaesina visited the Humberside Fire and Rescue headquarters for a taster day to find out.

The players visited Calvert Lane Fire Station, where the fire department demonstrated a real-life scenario in which firefighters could attend too.

Throughout the day, the similarities between the two became apparent, especially to Feka: “There is a great crossover with the Fire Service and Rugby League. Transferable skills such as working as a team, punctuality and communication would benefit any of the players if working in the fire service is the route they wish to take.”

After a tour of the facilities, the players made their way over to the main headquarters and were invited to take part in a National Firefighter Physical Test. Following a briefing, the players took on the enclosed space test. After participating in the test, second rower Jordan Lane said: “It was pretty dark and when you get halfway through, they put a blindfold on you so that you have to retrace your steps, which was quite challenging, but I did get through quite quickly, so I was quite happy with myself.”

Humberside Fire and Rescue are currently recruiting for firefighters now, but also looking ahead for the coming years, Steve Duffield from the Fire and Rescue team said: “Were on a massive recruitment campaign right now, a lot of new firefighters for the service over the next three or four years. We’re looking to engage with communities within the local area who have similarities to ourselves, and the players from Hull FC have certainly shown that.”
