Cornwall calling

Rugby League Cares underlined its commitment to support players at every professional club in mid-July when the charity’s Transition Manager Francis Stephenson made the long trip to Cornwall RLFC.

Francis held meetings with the League 1 club’s players, coaches and staff during his two-day visit, at which he explained the role of RL Cares and the RL Benevolent Fund and the ways in which both charities work.

He had delivered a similar presentation at Dewsbury Rams two weeks earlier: the main difference being that it took Stephenson five minutes to drive to Dewsbury from his home near Batley whilst the return trip to Cornwall involved flights via Dublin and four bus journeys!

“On behalf of the team at RL Cares I would like to thank everyone at Cornwall RLFC for the warm welcome I received and for the enthusiasm and appreciation for what the charities do,” said Francis.

“It was great to catch up with Cornwall’s head coach Mike Abbott and their welfare officer Christian Boulton and to learn more about the details of his role.

“The trip also served to reinforce our position that no matter where you play rugby league with a full-time or professional club, RL Cares is here for you.”

Francis was joined on the trip by Garreth Carvell from the GMB, who spoke to the players about the benefits of union membership.

The trip reinforced our position that no matter where you play rugby league with a full-time or professional club, RL Cares is here for you.
