In September 1973, Barrie Winrow suffered a devastating injury playing amateur rugby league for a local club in Wigan.
Barrie damaged vertebrae in his neck after an awkward tackle and was left tetraplegic.
Almost 40 years after his injury, the RL Benevolent Fund learned of Barrie's situation and reached out to him and his family, starting a relationship that is enabling the charity to make a positive difference to the quality of his life.
This is Barrie's story in his own words.

"What makes spinal-cord injuries as devastating as they are is that everything about them plays out in absolutes: they are instantaneous, utterly disabling and horribly permanent"
